Abbreviation for Extensible Markup Language
A simplified subset of SGML.

The biggest difference between XML and HTML is that XML allows users to define the tags. It is used for communication and information exchange between software, as well as for defining file formats etc. for storing various types of data. XML-based document file standards include ODF and Office Open XML.
