It is defined in the JIIMA Vision 2016 as:
"Systematic operation for the maintenance, storage, disposition, and long-term preservation of document information in an authentic manner. To enable the effective use of document information according to the purpose by functionally combining hardware, software, and content, regardless of whether it is structured or non-structured data, as a means to reliably and efficiently manage document information throughout its entire lifecycle, from the states where document information is created and obtained to storage, preservation, reuse, and disposition."
